Micha Maiello is a fashion designer, specializing in apparel design, technical development, pattern making and garment construction. He has relocated to North Carolina to pursue a career in American made apparel and textiles industry. Micha currently lives in Greensboro, North Carolina and works as designer Wrangler Jeanswear. He moved from Asheville, North Carolina where he worked for the sustainable and locally made clothing company, Asheville Apparel; sister company to Spiritex Organic Cotton.
Micha studied at the Politecnico di Milano where in 2013, he was granted his BFA in International Fashion Design with a specialization in Sportswear from the Fashion Institute of Technology. He was selected as the first F.I.T. graduate to show his senior thesis collection, Quiet the Contrary , at the London Graduate Fashion Week in the international catwalk show. His senior collection was featured in Vogue Italia and Elle UK. Following the completion of his degree, his internship with milanese designer, Andrea Incontri turned into a full time position as an assistant menswear designer and in-house sample maker.
Upon returning to the United States in 2014, he has worked as a freelance apparel/technical designer, pattern maker, sample maker and design consultant for start-up companies such as Oros LLC and Made in Prayer.
In July 2015, Micha was a resident at Sanctum Santorum, an international artist residency, presented by Animamus Art Salon at Gallery Sensei. There he exhibited a capsule collection called Halves of the Whole, which remarked on the dichotomy of the sacred (blue) masculine and the sacred (pink) feminine.
Throughout 2015, he collaborated with Brooklyn based artist, Ventiko, on a gown made completely out of recycled materials for her performance art piece, Sylva Dean and Me. The project was featured in the Vogue Italia photoshoot, Yes. It's Me. Susanna Bartsch, by Steven Klein for the January 2016 issue. The project was also presented at Armory Week's official events at Whitebox Gallery and Select Art Fair in 2015, NYC.
Micha’s work and abilities also spans into areas of fiber/material arts, fabric manipulation and paper collage. A reoccurring theme in his work is the gender binary, which is reinterpreted and represented with obvious and abstract symbolism. Micha's process consists of assigning elements and details to define the poles of him and her and build a continuum of everything in between. He approaches design, by dismantling characteristics of men's and women's clothing and reassembling them to create familiar and off beat themes of gender expression and identity.
In the past few years, Micha has began studying and exploring the subject of astrology. He has started an apprenticeship with a local astrologer and is aspiring to become an astrologer on the side of his design career. Throughout Micha's studies, he has been drawing huge inspiration from the imagery and archetypes of astrology. His education in this esoteric world had been influencing his approach to design and evolving his artistic sensibility.
