HALVES OF THE WHOLE
CAPSULE COLLECTION CREATED DURING SANCTUM SANCTORUM INTERNATIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCY
Sanctum Sanctorum was a month long artist residency that took place at Gallery Sensei in NYC, July 2015. The theme of the residency was Sanctum Sanctorum - latin meaning for 'Holiest of Holy'. 25 artists used the gallery space to create works of art spanning from mediums such as, drawing, painting, sculpture, instillations, performance art, poetry, collage and design.
Halves of the Whole is an exploration of the 'Sacred Masculine' and the 'Sacred Feminine' and what those tropes might look like in referential context. The use of pink and blue clearly illustrates him and her; drawing on the mode of an infantile gender identification. The collection's use of paper doll style, half garments plays with the a child-like expression of the two characters. The separate pieces can be mixed and match to create different looks within the same theme.
The dot pattern assigned to her and line pattern assigned to him was inspired by the characters in the 1960s animation The Dot and the Line. These characters demonstrate archetypal roles and how him and her behave in relation to each other.
The models moved through the space and interacted with the other artist's works of art and the guests viewing the exhibiton. The closing celebration was an interactive way for the audience to view the collection up close and mingle with the characters of him and her.
